The Professor Wamukota Memorial Medical Center is located approximately 15 kilometers from Mbale town on Mbale Tororo Highway. The facility is strategically linked to other neighboring districts like Tororo, Manafa, Butaleja, Malaba and Busia by road, patients from both urban and rural areas are able to access quality health care right in their area. Mbale District is one of Uganda’s largest and fastest growing areas (pop. 416,000); however, the District is among the poorest regions in the country. The Eastern Uganda region is home to some of Uganda’s highest maternal/child death rates, and 80 percent of the population lives in rural areas with little or no access to basic health care. Malaria and HIV/AIDS are prevalent. Likewise, famine, malnutrition and lack of clean water are constants in the rural areas. The region lacks professional healthcare personnel, thus forcing the rural population to be served in inadequate government-owned rural dispensaries that provide only first-line basic treatment.
